2020 January

Dear Friends

I hope that you all have had a wonderful Christmas enjoying the season with good company, having a rest and beginning to make plans for 2020.

The New Year is here, and it’s the time that people make New Year Resolutions. I have made plenty of these in the past ie going to the gym, eating healthily, not watching so much TV, etc. It’s when Slimming World, Weight Watchers and Gym Memberships go up. The problem is we start off with the right intentions that soon frizzle out and we are left feeling frustrated.

I now don’t set resolutions. Instead I do New Year Hopes and Dreams. When I was a teenager going to a church youth group, we were encouraged to think about our hopes and dreams for the coming year. We had a little ritual - each year we would open up our dreams from the previous year, share anything we wanted with others, give thanks for all God had done and then set fire to it. We would then write a new letter for the coming year. Time and time again I have been dumbstruck with how many prayers get answered.

The bible says: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11). We live in a world where we are unsure what is going to happen: with politics; the environment; natural disasters; etc. But as Christians there is so much we can hope for. I don’t know about you, but I believe prayer works, I believe that we can petition God and he listens to us.

Therefore I encourage you at the start of this New Year to join me in writing your New Year Hopes and Dreams. Here are the steps:

  1. On a small piece of paper write down your hopes and dreams for you, your family, the church, your community and the world.

  2. Place this in an envelope and write on the front your name and New Year Hopes & Dreams 2020.

  3. Either give this envelope to me, someone you trust, your house group leader or place it inside your bible.

  4. In January 2021 open the envelope either on your own or in a group and give thanks to God for all that he has done.

I pray that we all have a blessed New Year where we see God doing new things and we each endeavour to deepen our relationship with him.

Blessings   Karen
